This album is a surefire classic, full of intricate riffs and progressive-rock/thrash fusion. The musicianship in this album is just fucking great. Not your standard technical death metal album. There is a lot of groove to it, and you can actually headbang at a steady rate with most of the riffs, but still contains an element of technicality, without taking anything away from the music.

At first I tought only shit of this album since I don´t listen to -Core, But I´m very contempt of adquiring this album, since this band has done a great impovement from their mediocre Deathcore to some solid Death Metal with very little -Core influence. Spawn of Possession has picked up steam in the metal underground in recent years due to the word-of-mouth success of their debut album Cabinet. Well, 3 years after the fact, the band releases their sophomore effort to many waiting fans. I wanted this album to be just a little bit better than Cabinet, but I got something more.
The band experiments a little more on this album. They turned up the technicality up a notch, more technical than Cabinet was, but they don't overdo it, like Necrophagist or some other tech death bands. The band also shows their affinity for adding random things into the songs. Lash By Lash has a little clean guitar break, and Scorched, the final track, has a minute long intro in which there's nothing but clean guitar work and nice, melodic solos which weave in and out in a pretty strange polyrhythm. Each of the tracks on Noctambulant deliver, they are punishing yet technical, but neither side is overpowering.

Embryonic Depravity are not concerned with a lot of musicality but their energy is focused on beating the piss out of your ears. This is an extreme metal record for fans with the attention span to absorb its intricate bludgeoning. If that includes you, then welcome to suicide. These songs are all slamming and indifferent, and they also can kick a whole lot of ass. "Bound by Dejection" sounds like a half dozen death metal bands jamming together. Tracks like "Apotheosis Through Isolation" and "Acephalous Transmutation" grind through intense batteries of chaos and erosion, and the title track is like Suffocation and Demilich having a tug of war with your intestines.

This is a Technical Death Metal band that dropped all of their Deathcore influence to be recognized by the metal community. I can say gained props from me for doing this, but more work is needed to make more grabs within the music and to make everything not sound like just one song. With the talent of the band surely in the future they can make a release that will please many Death Metal fans. But at this time they are right in the middle of the road.

Initially fresh and energetically charged, the second outing from this incensed Italian mob does pall in comparison to some of the acts they emulate, but in truth, " My Own Private Armageddon" is as good a representation as any before it. Chopping their influences like meat cleavers, Slowmotion Apocalypse sound like a rabid dog gnawing through its owner's leg; thriving in the agony it's creating, and the disease it's spreading. Where most of the material would slot perfectly into place on the last Unearth album, there is a stunning amount of variation, predominately on the stand out tracks. Standing comfortably between the thrash and metalcore scenes, This album is surprisingly aggressive for an Italian release, leaving very little room for melody of any kind, except for the brief slashes of melodic death metal. In pace and structure, the songs themselves owe a lot to The Haunted, whilst vocally the album is dominated by skin blasting screams and bellows of the extreme variety.

The album is some of the best death/thrash metal releases I've heard in a long time. The production is a lot better than I was expecting which first starts this album off in a good direction. I enjoy the influences of both death and thrash metal that are presented on this album along with the variation in vocals and between songs. The riffs are driving, catchy, and crushing all rolled into one, with some great harmonics thrown into the mix. The drums offer a good sound as well which is heard complimenting with the vocals and guitar.

This band is heavily influenced by the likes of Cryptopsy and Suffocation except that the music has not yet reached the heights that those two bands have achieved in their careers. The band also has this inclination to write songs around breakdowns.At 17 songs, 36 minutes, the duration and length of the songs and album points to grindcore brevity, as many of the songs range from a minute to three minutes, but in truth, every single one of the short sharp tracks (except for classic interludes “The Defiled”, “Hollow” and “Domicile”) pack enough punch, voracity and prowess to keep you listening for every blast beat and well placed lurch (i.e. “Laceration”, the slightly deathcore -ish “Lovers” and superb “Rebirth”).

My conception of this album changed over time. I always give myself time to write these reviews, because my full sense of the album does not develop until I have listened to it like 3-4 times, and with some albums it changes as time progresses. This album totally blew me away at first. This band is basically like the Italian version of Beheaded. Similar style, similar importance on riffing and on making riffs stick and be unique. They achieve this with less success then their Maltese counterparts, but they still managed to release an excellent, above average death metal album, with some technical elements.

The Everhaunting Past Chapter IV: A Splendid Retrospection is quite the redundant mouthful of an album title, and perhaps the band should have sunk more time into the music. This is the 3rd album from the Germans, a dense offering of the very typical Swedish melodic deathstyle, with the usual influences in Dark Tranquillity and At the Gates. The band's previous album Sterling Black Icon was quite weak, and though small steps have been made, with a darker tone, Though many of the band's breakdowns are the typical type you expect from any derivative metalcore/melodeath crossover band, Fragments of Unbecoming do shine in a few places, when the drums and rhythm guitars are conjoined and the leads and melodies scream over them.

The album does have a few drawbacks of course. While the vocals are great, I feel they could have been more varied. Not the rasping in it's self, it's just that I wish there where more styles than said rasping. I would have loved to hear more clean vocals for instance. Also, the drumming got slightly stale at times. I feared I had briefly suffered "retro thrash fever" for a few short moments Further, I just felt that there wasn't enough of the album. Now, even though most of the album was strong, I think their anger should have been sampled more. These drawbacks aren't too negative though, as everything that is presented is done extraordinarily well, resulting in what may be the best Gorgoroth album to date.
